Peace and greetings. Recently I found in my archives a recorded file (mp3) of a radio interview I conducted with Gene Logsdon on 1 April 2011. As it was April Fools Day, we were having a little fun with his newest book, “Holy S***.“ I would be more than happy to share this with the family, as I know that hearing a loved one’s voice once years after their passing can be of comfort. Please contact me if this is of any interest.

Loved his writings. The kind of books you read over and over. Like Teale and Borland, this type of writing has brought comfort and peace to many over the years.

Gene Logsden gave the world some good humor an interesting thoughts. People like me in the world of gardeners, farmers (of all stripes), and contraries enjoyed his writing and his common sense. I'm glad he was so inclined to share, inform, and entertain. Voices like his are needed and his will be missed.

Our best to his friends and loved ones.

My memories of Gene are from when he was my intern when I was Director of the Indiana University Folklore Archive in the early 1960s. I remember him fondly for his enthusiasm for rural culture and his helpfulness with our projects. Thank you Gene. You helped and made a difference!

When I think of our Logsdon Family, I am always; ALWAYS, astounded at the depth of talent that is exhibited by its members. Literature (of course), Music, Education, Science, Engineering, Government, ..and more... it is a family that gives and makes a difference in that act of giving. Gene impressed me because he never ever hesitated to speak his truth. Even knowing that it might upset the apple cart (and many times, that apple cart needed upsetting), you knew where he stood on the subject at hand. He inspired me in that manner. Whether by design or accident, I believe that Gene worked his entire life adhering to these words from our founding fathers:

Congress shall make no law ........abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

What a light he was. I raise my glass of Makers Mark to honor my cousin, our voice .

May the blessing of light be on you—
light without and light within.
May the blessed sunlight shine on you
and warm your heart
till it glows like a great peat fire.

Rest in peace, Gene. You will be sorely missed.

Dear Family and Friends,

My deep sympathy to you all at Gene's passing. I first met him more than 35 years ago when I covered agriculture, natural resources, and rural life for The Blade newspaper out of the then-Bowling Green regional bureau. Gene and I became instant friends, and were of like mind when it came to loving the land and supporting the Leopoldian land ethic. We had many deep, thoughtful conversations about the state of farming and conservation of the years, all of which helped cement my own resolve and channel my commentary. To me, he was the Wendell Berry of northwest Ohio and beyond. Please know that Gene will be well remembered and that the highest tribute to his memory will be to continue preaching his love for and stewardship of the land.

kindly,

Steve Pollick

Thank you Carol for sharing with us the greatest in my opinion agricutural writer and genius of this and the last century. He has inspired ,educated and affected so many that he and with your support,I believe changed agriculture and peoples lives for the better worldwide ,forever.I still have his first column from Farm Journal.and a signed copy of At natures Pace . He should have won awards for that book! It's such a loss for us fans and friends that it is impossible to imagine the depth of your sorrow. Just knowing how he inadvertantly changed my childhood and there for my life with his words and ideas, I cant imagine what you are going through. My sincerest condolences to you ,your family and extended family on the loss of this great man.He changed all of our lives for the better.God Bless you.
