Steven C. Baker of Upper Sandusky, Ohio passed away surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, July 27th, 2024 at Blanchard Valley Hospital in Findlay, Ohio.
Steven was born to Charles and Mary (Keckler) Baker in Kenton, Ohio on July 22nd, 1944. He married his high school sweetheart, Carmen Walton, September 3rd, 1966 and they began their story in Forest, Ohio. Steve graduated as part of the last class attending the Forest High School in 1962.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Carmen (Walton); daughter, Shannon (Michael) Wellin; son, Chad (Christina) Baker; grandchildren, Anna Wellin, Luke Wellin, Lauren Baker, Caroline Baker; sister, Patricia Fintel; and sister-in-law, Lynn Walton. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mary (Keckler) Baker and sister-in-law Janice (Walton) Rogers.
Steve began his career with the New York Life Insurance Company in Forest, Ohio, later moving to Upper Sandusky where he established what became Baker Financial Group, continuing to serve his clients and community over his 55 year career. Steve had a brilliant career with New York Life, leading the Toledo General Office several times and qualifying for New York Life's Council program for 50 consecutive years. He was recently inducted into the New York Life Columbus Office Retirement Hall of Fame.
Steve's remarkable success in working with farmers and the farming community earned him invitations to speak on several panels at the New York Life Insurance Company's Council meetings in New York City and Washington, DC. His contributions to the field and his commitment to his clients were truly exemplary.
Steve served as president of the Upper Sandusky Rotary Club, the Upper Sandusky Chamber of Commerce, and the Blanchard Valley Life Underwriters Association. He also served on the Hancock Hardin Wyandot Putnam Community Action Commission board of directors , and played a key role in establishing the Trinity United Church of Christ Endowment Fund and served as the first President of the Endowment Committee. He was a long-time member of the St. John's Evangelical Church in Kenton, Ohio. Steve was dedicated to his clients, business, community and met many friends along his journey.
Outside of his career, Steve was extremely dedicated to his family. He was the most loving husband, father, and grandfather a family could ask for. A supportive figure in his family members' lives, he enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting and musical events. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, particularly in detailing cars, pet sitting, and in the pickup line at his grandchildren's schools. He always saw the best in people and will be remembered for his generosity and incredible sense of humor.
The funeral services for Steven C. Baker will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, August 3, 2024, at the St John's Evangelical Church, Kenton, with Rev. Dr. Randall Forester officiating.
Visitations will be Friday, August 2, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and 5:00pm to 7:00pm at the Lucas Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky, and 1 hour before service time at the church on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Evangelical Church in Kenton or the Christian Food Center in Upper Sandusky, and can be sent to Lucas Batton Funeral Home, 476 S Sandusky Ave. Upper Sandusky, Ohio 43351.
