Roger A. Mawer, age 92, of Harpster, Ohio, passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025 at 7:27 pm at the Wyandot County Nursing Home in Upper Sandusky after a short stay.
Roger, often known as Podge, was born in his home in Harpster on the Mawer Homestead to Arthur and Nadene Mawer, both of whom are deceased. He was preceded in death by sisters Laureen, Mary Frances, Jane and Linda and his older brother, Steven. He was the last surviving child.
Roger lived his entire life in the Harpster area. He graduated from Harpster High School in 1950 where he enjoyed playing basketball and baseball. After graduation, he became involved in the family farm and especially in dairying. He developed a fine herd of registered Holsteins over the next thirty years. After selling the herd, his desire was to be fully crop farming which he accomplished and continued for many years.
Roger's family with Audrey had five children, four daughters and one son, Douglas, who died at five years of age. His daughters include Kathleen (John) Frayer, Valerie (Dave) Bower, Cynthia Schmidt and Janet (Steve) Anderson, all of whom are local. His blended family with Helen include Debbie Chesnut, Leigh(Kurt) Richter, Jim (Kyla) Nordyke, Matt Chatlain and Kim (Kelby) Collins. There are 19 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Preceding Roger in death was his wife, Helen, and 2 grandsons, Scott Anderson and Casey Nordyke.
Roger was a community minded gentleman. He was a lifelong member of Harpster Methodist Church. He served Pitt Township as a volunteer firefighter and as a Trustee for many years of his adult life. In his Upper Sandusky community, Roger proudly served on the Wyandot Memorial Hospital Board and as County Commissioner. No story about Roger would be complete without mentioning his commitment to golf, one of his prized hobbies.
Visitation will be held from 3:00-5:00 pm on Sunday, July 13, at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, July 14, at 11:00 am at Lucas Batton Funeral home with Pastor Steve Sturgeon officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
