Roger A. Bowen, age 91, of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2024, surrounded by his family, at the Marion General Hospital.
Roger was born on July 8, 1932 in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, to Miller E. and Bernice C. (Coons) Bowen, both of whom are deceased. He married R. Jane Walter on September 27, 1953 in the Marseilles Methodist Church, and she survives.
He is survived by 2 daughters, Deb (Bill) Sturgeon of Upper Sandusky, and Trudy Wait of Granger, Indiana. 4 grandchildren, Jason (Jody) Sturgeon, Lesley (Dan) Hayman, Alex (Katie) Takeuchi-Wait, and Adam Wait, 5 great grandchildren, Teddy, Hannah, Audrey, Lydia and Malana. Along with his companion neighbor dog, Lilly.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 brothers, George and Donald.
He was a 1950 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School and went on to work his entire life retiring in 2022, after owning and operating Bowen Implement Company as an Oliver dealer, and later years sold White Farm Equipment and Ford New Holland. It was then after selling farm equipment, Roger started Kustom Karts, and began building and fabricating golf carts for home usage.
Roger was a 80 plus year member of the John Stewart Methodist Church. A life member of the BPOE #83, Wyandot County Rod & Gun Club, Wyandot County Sheriff's Auxiliary for over 40 years, and the Upper Sandusky Fire Department, where he served as Assistant Fire Chief for many years.
He was a volunteer with the Fantasy of Lights since its inception, along with working with Hospice on Angel Flights and Make-A-Wish! He received the honor of being Upper Sandusky's Citizen of the Year in 2003.
For hobbies, Roger enjoyed collecting his Oliver Tractors along with other brands, both big and small, going to antique tractor shows, jet skiing, snowmobiling fishing and boating at Lake Erie, and being a licensed pilot and plane owner for many years. He also enjoyed spending time with Jane at their Florida home in the winter
He will be remembered for being a "jack of all trades", and for his friendly nature having never met a stranger, and his willingness to help anyone in need.
Funeral services for Roger Bowen will be held at 11:00 am Monday, February 19, 2024 at the Lucas Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky, with Rev. Kenneth Wessler officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery
Visitations will be held from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, on Sunday at Lucas Batton Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fantasy of Lights, John Stewart Methodist Church, or a charity of the Donor's Choice, and can be sent to Lucas Batton Funeral Home, 476 S. Sandusky Ave., Upper Sandusky, Ohio, 43351.
