Robert E. Gatchel Sr

Robert E. Gatchel , age 78, passed away on Friday, August 14, 2009 at 8:10am at Wyandot Memorial Hospital in Upper Sandusky.

Robert was born on May 26, 1931 to Winter L. and Beatrice C. (McClosky) Gatchel, both of whom are deceased. He married
Doris Joan Vogel on December 30, 1950 in Carey, Ohio and she survives.

Also surviving are 4 sons, Dennis (Deb) Gatchel of Upper Sandusky, Robert (Jeanie) Gatchel Jr. of Tiffin, James (Lora) Gatchel of Nevada and Lyle (Jo Ellen Simonsen) Gatchel of Nevada. Along with 3 daughters, Christine (James) Bricely of Keaau, Hawaii, Nannette (Liz) Gatchel of Portland, Oregon and Janice (Jeff) Williams of Oxford, Alabama.

10 grandchildren, Nicholas Gatchel, Nathan Gatchel, Adrienne Balliro, Jesse Bricely, Erin Bricely, Alexa Gatchel, Ethan Gatchel, Cody Gatchel, James Gatchel and Jack Gatchel. Four Step Grandchildren, Christian Williams, Kristina Gaster, Katherine Merriman, William Merriman and 5 Great Grandchildren, 5 Step Great Grandchildren survive along with a sister, Shirley Howard of Carey.

Robert was preceded in death by a grandson Luke Bricely, a brother, James E. Gatchel and a sister, Betty Savidge.

Robert retired after 15 years as a corrections officer with the Wyandot County Sheriffs Department and before that he had worked as a foreman with Mills Metal in Upper Sandusky for 25 years. He was a member of John Stewart United Methodist Church in Upper Sandusky where he once served the church as a trustee and also as the custodian. He was a life member of BPOE #83 and a member of the Wyandot County Sportsman Club. He graduated from Carey High School in 1949.

For hobbies Robert enjoyed, actually loved, fishing and hunting, bird watching,
mushroom hunting and searching for arrow heads. He was a
avid Cleveland Indians fan and enjoyed remodeling his home,
doing woodworking. And most of all, he loved spending time with his entire family.
