Richard "Dick" L. Gillen, age 81, of Upper Sandusky, Ohio passed away at his home surrounded by his family, at 12:02pm on Tuesday, May 18, 2010.
Dick was born on September 23, 1928 in Upper Sandusky to Russel and Orva (Gemmrig) Gillen, both of whom are deceased.
He married Mary Lou Larick on September 21, 1946 in Greenup, Kentucky and she survives.
Also surviving are his 3 sons, Mike (Karen) Gillen, Jerry Gillen and Mark Gillen, all of Upper Sandusky. Grandchildren, Casey Gillen, Cory Gillen, Robyn (Roscoe) Caceres, Cindy Gillen and Diana (Rick) Moore and great grandchildren, Grant Moore, Will Moore, Reagen Moore and Emma Crowly.
Dick is also survived by his sister Jackie (Jim) Walter, 2 brothers David Gillen of Mt. Gilead, Ohio, and Fred (Connie) Gillen of Upper Sandusky. He is survived by many nieces and nephews and extended family in Mexico, Mildred and Lorenzo Pallanco, Diego Pallanco and Doris Barcelo.
Dick was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rebecca Gillen a brother Ed Gillen and 2 sisters, Joanne Hensel and Rosemary Welge.
Dick owned and operated The Snack Shack, formerly located in downtown Upper and later Mike's Drive Inn for 26 years.
Before that he had worked for Chief Dairy, the Upper Dairy and Pennington Bread.
He was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church in Upper Sandusky where he had served on the church council. He was a member of the Wyandot County Sportmans Club, the Rod and Gun Club and a former member of the Lions Club, all in Upper Sandusky.
For hobbies Dick loved to travel with his wife, fish at Lake Erie, mushroom hunt, bird watch and spending time with family and spending the winters in Mexico.
