Melvin "Mick" Snyder, 85, passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at his home in Marion, Ohio surrounded by family. He had bravely fought cancer for over five years.
Mick was born on October 8, 1937, in Jamestown, Ohio, to Warren and Alice (Woodruff) Snyder, both of whom are deceased. He was married to his high school sweetheart Ruth Ann Sheaffer for over 63 years and she survives.
He is survived by his son, Tim Snyder of Sidney, Ohio, a granddaughter, Megan Snyder of Washington, D.C., and brother Robert Snyder of Grove City, Ohio. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, James (Elaine) Sheaffer of Springfield, Illinois, along with 4 nieces.
Mick was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Snyder, and his brother, Wilgus Snyder.
Mick graduated from Harpster High School in 1956, where he excelled as a baseball pitcher and basketball player. Mick and his family had moved to Harpster during his 8th grade year of school; after meeting Ruth Ann, he told his mother he was going to marry her someday.
He served in the U.S. Army Reserves for 6 years. He retired as a salesman from the former Cooper Auto Supply and Industrial Sales after 32 years. He had a part‑time golf club building and regripping business called Grips-N-More, which he expanded to include industrial sales and continued for several more years.
Mel was a lifelong Methodist, previously worshipping at Wesley United Methodist Church, where he taught a young adult Sunday School class for over 20 years. In 2004 when the church merged with Prospect Street United Methodist Church, he continued volunteering for the church and traveled on several mission trips.
He was an avid golfer and a long-time member of the former Hickory Grove Country Club in Harpster. Mick enjoyed woodworking and did many projects around his home. In his later years he made over 100 cutting boards, giving the majority of them away.
Mick was a lifelong Cleveland Browns and Ohio State Buckeyes fan and along with Ruth Ann, he enjoyed traveling to Ohio's Amish Country.
Funeral services for Mel Snyder will be held 12:00pm, Monday, February 13, 2023, at the Prospect Street United Methodist Church, 185 S. Prospect Street, Marion with Rev. Josh Freshour officiating. Burial will follow at Grand Prairie Cemetery.
Visitations will be held 2 hours prior to service time, from 10:00am to 12:00pm, at the church on Monday.
