Mary A. Thomas, age 82, of Upper Sandusky, Ohio
passed away Thursday, September 17, 2009 at 9:27am
at Wyandot Memorial Hospital in Upper Sandusky.
Mary was born on March 16, 1927 to Ralph E. and Edna E. (Shumaker) Bastel. She married Earl R. Thomas on November 18, 1950 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Upper Sandusky, Ohio and he died on February 5, 2006.
Mary is survived by a son Robert M. "Rob" (Bonnie) Thomas of New Bern, North Carolina, and a daughter Corinne M. (Ron) Casali of Sandusky, Ohio. Five grandchildren, Ben (Candace) Thomas, Dan Thomas, Brad Casali, Mary Thomas, and Elizabeth Casali.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one brother David Bastel, and two sisters Corinne Strasser and Joan Bastel.
Mary graduated from Upper Sandusky High School in 1945, where she was active in music having accompanied the orchestra and choir on piano. She went on to attended St. Mary of the Springs (Ohio Dominican) in Columbus. She then was a homemaker and did help her husband at the Thomas and Frantz Furniture Store in Upper Sandusky
She was a member of the Transfiguration of the Lord Catholic Church in Upper Sandusky where she was a former Eucharistic Minister, and a former member of both the Rosary Alter Society, and Catholic Ladies of Columbia. Mary was a member of the Tri Sigma Sorority, Alpha Chapter and she also volunteered at Wyandot Memorial Hospital.
For hobbies Mary loved music and was wonderful at playing the piano. She enjoyed golfing with her husband, despite her eyesight. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, talking on the phone, and following Cleveland sports teams, especially the Indians and Browns. Mary was known as the historian for her family, for whom she loved dearly. She will be sadly missed by her nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Mary A. Thomas will be held on Monday, September 28, 2009 at 10:00 AM at the Transfiguration of the Lord Catholic Church in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, with the Rev. Robert Dendinger officiating the services. Burial will follow at the St. Peter's Cemetery in Upper Sandusky.
Visitations will be held on Sunday, September 27, from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky, with a prayer service to be held at 1:30pm prior to visitations on Sunday.
