Mary Ellen Sheaffer

August 16, 1924 — February 17, 2014

Mary Ellen Sheaffer, age 89, of Upper Sandusky, Ohio and formerly of the village of Wyandot, passed away on Monday, February 17, 2014 at 8:30pm in the Fairhaven Community in Upper Sandusky.

Mary was born on August 16, 1924 in Marion County to Thomas and Bertha (Leadmon) Grossman, both of whom are deceased. She married William Sheaffer on November 17, 1946 at the Wyandot Baptist Church and he died on December 12, 2003.

She is survived by two sons, Hal D. (Debora) Sheaffer of Ashland, Ohio, and Steven M. (Patricia) Sheaffer of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. Four grandchildren, Thomas, Briette, Lesley and Neil Sheaffer and three great grandchildren, Scott, Alexis and Emily Sheaffer.

Mary Ellen is also survived by her sister Mable Tong, of Upper Sandusky, and two sister in laws, Betty Louise Grossman, and Betty Van Grossman, both of Upper Sandusky.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister, Jewell Dutcher, and three brothers, Chester, Cleo and Warren Grossman.

Mary Ellen retired after many years as the board clerk for the Ridgedale School System. Before that she served as clerk for the Antrim Township School in Wyandot.
In her earlier years, she worked as a bank clerk for the former Harpster Bank and then National City Bank in Marion

She was a member of the Wyandot Baptist Church having been a member since 1946, where she served as the church treasurer and as a member of the Mission Circle.

Mary Ellen graduated from Harpster High School in 1942, after first attending Kirkpatrick and Eden Schools.

For hobbies, Mary Ellen enjoyed fishing, camping with her family, gardening, and doing crafts and sewing. She also was an avid reader.

Funeral services for Mary Ellen Sheaffer will be held at 11:00am Saturday, February 22, 2014 in the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home at Upper Sandusky with the Rev. Rorke Warne and Kirby Francis. Burial will follow at Nevada Cemetery.

Visitations will be held on Friday, February 21, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, or Hospice of Wyandot County and can be sent to Lucas-Batton, 476 S. Sandusky Ave. Upper Sandusky, OH 43351.
