Martha Mae Kuenzli, 96, was lifted to heaven to be with her eternal Father on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at Wyandot County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Upper Sandusky. Born on May 9, 1920 to the late Arthur and Ethel (Schoenberger) Phelps in Wharton, Ohio. She is preceded in death by brother, Arthur Phelps Jr.; grandson Jeremy and great-granddaughter Kelsey.
Apple pies, idiot pickles and homemade ice cream, Martha was an amazing cook who offered her talents to schools and churches. She could be seen perched on a stool, wearing her worn apron or standing at the stove with her bow-legged 4'11 stature concocting a yummy recipe. And don't forget about the molasses cookies!
Many Christmas memories exist of her entire family packed into the Wheeler Drive basement, lined with Avon collectibles and hidden pathways. Although busy with raising 5 children, she worked at the Chief Dairy and was a school cook (we're telling you, she could really cook). Martha was an Avon representative for many years, but also was busy as a long-time 4-H adviser. Some of her favorite activities included gardening, travelling, telling stories, sewing and crochet. Her beautiful baby blankets and doilies will be treasured by many generations.
Martha was a woman of faith. Devoted to Christ, she was active with in her lifetime with several churches including John Stewart UMC, Epworth UMC and Central Methodist in Kings Mountain. She faithfully attended Sunday School, served at community centers and church luncheons (probably cooked the meal) and sang hymns without abandon in her own key. Martha has touched the lives of many people over the years by residing in Upper Sandusky, Marion and Kings Mountain, N.C.
