Martha Harmon, age 105, Upper Sandusky's 1997 Citizen of the Year, passed away on February 2, 2012 in Lincoln, Illinois.
Mrs. Harmon was born Dec. 6, 1906, the only daughter of William A. and Anna (Eckert) High. She was baptized and confirmed in St. John's Lutheran Church, New Washington, Ohio.
On June 21, 1942, she married Lawrence E. Harmon who preceded her in death May 4, 1998. Also deceased is a daughter, Mary Berger, three brothers, Paul, Harry, and Luther High, and sister-in-law Elizabeth "Cubby" High.
She is survived by a daughter Celia Ann (Robert) Jeckel, sons Larry (Judi) Harmon and John (Jo Weidman) Harmon, a sister-in-law Patsy High, a grandson Barry (Liz Newman) Harmon, granddaughters Laurie (David) Mesko, Natalie (Case) McGee, Carrie Harmon, Lindsay (Jack) Harmon-Matthews, Julie (Brian Williams) Harmon, step-grandson Heath (Sheila) Mathews, and great grandchildren Dylan Harmon, Andrew and Kate Mesko, and Sierra and Dorian Mathews.
Mrs. Harmon attended Wittenberg University for two years, receiving a teaching certificate. She continued her education in summer school and night classes, receiving her degree from Ohio Northern University.
Martha retired from teaching in 1973 having taught for seventeen years in the Sulphur Springs School and in 20 years in Upper Sandusky, where she was the 6 grade teacher and head teacher at East School Building. Martha also taught at Salem School and Union School all in the Upper Sandusky School System.
She became a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where she was a Sunday School teacher and superintendent and a member of W.E.L.C.A. (Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America). She was an associate member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Emden, Illinois.
She was a charter member of Lambda Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma. She transferred to Kappa Chapter when she began teaching in the Upper Sandusky Schools.
After retirement she became a hostess at Wyandot Memorial Hospital. She was the hospital guild's first president. She was a life member of Wyandot County Retired Teachers.
Mrs. Harmon was well known for reading to children in her role as Mother Goose and for her volunteer work in school classrooms.
She was a member of the Mothers' Club and Alpha Usando, and acted at the Star Theater.
Funeral Services for Martha H. Harmon will be held at 11:00am Tuesday, February 7, at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky with the Rev. Joe Trestor officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Upper Sandusky.
Visitations will be held on Monday, February 6, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the St. Paul's Lutheran Radio Fund, Wyandot Memorial Hospital, or any charity of the donor's choice and can be sent to Lucas-Batton, 476 S. Sandusky Ave. Upper Sandusky, OH 43351.
