John Willhelm, age 83, of Nevada, Ohio died Friday, March 27, 2009 at 12:16pm at Wyandot Memorial Hospital in Upper Sandusky, Ohio.
John was born on July 22, 1925 in Galion, Ohio to John and Helen (Dunham) Willhelm both of whom are deceased. He married Hazel Lohr on October 9, 1948 in Greenup, Kentucky and she survives in Nevada, Ohio.
John is also survived by a son, John W. L. (Cindy) Willhelm of White Cottage, Ohio, and a daughter: Pam (Bob) Looker of Uttica, Ohio. Five grandchildren also survive; Daniel Brady, Robert Looker, Annette (Randy) Williams, Pam (Joel) Jones, and Rebecca Willhelm and six great grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his parents, and a daughter Rebecca H. who died in infancy.
Through the years John had worked at a variety of places from Swann Rubber, Crawford Steel, Cobey Manufacturing and Riverside Restaurant. He was a veteran of the US Navy having served in WWII in the Construction Battlion having taken part in the invasion of the Solomon Islands, Okinawa and the Krus Island Group. John was awarded the Victory Medal and he also received a Purple Heart.
John was a former member the American Legion Post # 225 in Upper Sandusky and the Knights of Pythias in Nevada. John was a Cub Scout Leader with Cub Pack 179 and was active with the Boy Scouts #777 in Upper Sandusky and #138 in Sycamore.
His hobbies included traveling, collecting stamps, raising flowers, camping and painting statues.

John wish was to be cremated and his ashes to be scattered at sea in the Pacific Ocean.
