R. Jerry Gier of Upper Sandusky, Ohio died on Thursday May 29, 2008 at 7:45am while vacationing with his wife Sara in Juneau, Alaska.
Jerry was born on July 13, 1942 in Bucyrus Ohio to Gerald and Helen Louise (Koehler) Gier both of whom are deceased. He then married Sara Lynn (Myers) Gier on May 27, 1962 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Upper Sandusky, Ohio and she survives.
Jerry is survived by 3 sons:Jeffrey Gier of De Leon Springs, FL; Scott Gier and Jamie Gier both of Upper Sandusky, Ohio. A sister Barbara S. Gier of Glouster, Ohio and 7 grandchildren: Kelsey, Ashley, Sara, Samuel, Hannah, Jacob, and Olivia.
He was a 1960 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School and went on to Franklin
University for an Electronic Technology Degree.
Jerry then moved to St. Louis to work for McDonnell Aircraft in their Aerospace Program. After that Jerry moved back to Upper Sandusky to work with his parents
at Gier TV and Appliance where he managed the Carey store. He and his wife Sara
later purchased The General Store in Harpster, Ohio and operated it for many years. Jerry was a self employed blacksmith for many years, traveling from Anapolis to Nashville as a juried artist. And ended up retiring from Bridgestone APM Company in Upper Sandusky.
Jerry was a member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ in rural Upper Sandusky. He was a former member of the Pitt Twp. Volunteer Fire Department, and of the Northwest Ohio Blacksmith Association, along with the North American Turkey Federation, and Fort MacArthur Long Rifles. He enjoyed blacksmithing and hunting, which he did early in his years by bow and muzzle loader. He enjoyed hunting for white tail deer and turkeys. His interests also included science and
recently computer technology. Jerry loved to spend time with his family and especially his grandchildren.
Funeral Services for Jerry will be held at 10:30am Friday, June 6, 2008 at Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky. The Rev. Martin Stiffler will be officiating. Burial will take place at Old Mission Cemetery.
Friends may call on Thursday, June 5, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky and 1 hour before service time on Friday.
Memorial contributions may be made to Wyandot Memorial Hospital or Wyandot County Pheasants Forever (to be used for projects in the county), or Hospice of Wyandot County and can be sent the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home, 476 S. Sandusky Ave. Upper Sandusky, Ohio 43351.
