James Lester Evans, age 95, of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2015
at 8:41pm at the Wyandot County Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Home in Upper
Sandusky.
He was born on April 16, 1920 in Carbon Hill, Ohio, to Charles A. and Blanche (Perkins)
Evans, both of whom are deceased. He married Mary Jeanne Boyd on July 19, 1940 at the
Presbyterian parsonage in Logan, Ohio. She died on November 27, 2004.
He is survived by 2 sons: James A. (Nancy) Evans of Central Lake, Michigan, William L.
(Sylvia) Evans of Upper Sandusky, and a daughter, Mary L Meier of Lansing, Michigan. Seven
grandchildren, Ryan Evans, Jeffrey Evans, Evan Meier, Glenn Mohre, Michael Mohre, Philip
Mohre and Mark Mohre, and 11 great grandchildren.
James was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a daughter, Jeanne Ann Mohre, and a sister,
Marjorie Faye Tucker and a special friend, Peg Aller.
James attended Carbon Hill High School and went on to serve his country in the US Army
during World War II with Battery D 131st. AAA Gun Battalion.
He was Passenger and Freight Agent for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Company
in Marion now known as CSX Transportation, retiring in 1981 after 36 years.
He was the oldest member of the First Presbyterian Church in Upper Sandusky, where he
served as a church trustee and an ordained elder.
He was a 60 year member of the Warpole Lodge #176 F&AM, served as Master in 1961, and
District Deputy from 1969 to 1970. McCutchen Chapter #96 RAM, served as High Priest in
1969. Upper Sandusky Council #98, served as master in 1969. Warpole Chapter #366 OES,
served as patron in 1969. Marion Commandery #36; Scottish Rite-Valley of Toledo, Zenobia
Shrine-DeMolay Cross of Honor and Demolay Legion of Honor.
He loved to travel the country with his travel trailer, enjoy time with his
grandchildren and follow the Cleveland Indians.
Funeral services for James L. Evans will be held at 10:30am, Thursday, May 28, 2015 at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky with the Rev. Kenneth Wessler officiating. Burial will follow at Old Mission Cemetery where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Upper Sandusky Color Guard.
Visitations will be held on Wednesday, from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky. There will be a Masonic Memorial Service at 7:45pm on Wednesday.
