July 16, 1924 — March 18, 2015

Beloved husband & father, Dr. Herschel Almar "Dusty" Rhodes, MD, age 90 of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at 7:50pm in Wyandot Memorial Hospital in Upper Sandusky. The family rejoices in knowing he is in the arms of his beloved Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

Herschel was born on July 16, 1924 in Montville, Ohio, to Slade Newton and Helen (Smith) Rhodes. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Ruth A. Russell & Doris J. Rhodes. He married the love of his life, Jeannette Lillis Nutting on June 17, 1950 at the Windermere Methodist Church in East Cleveland, Ohio, and she survives in Upper Sandusky.

He is also survived by 5 daughters, Cheri (Gary) Mack of Westerville, Lori (Mark) Vaas of Worthington, Patti (Don) Spiegel of Upper Sandusky, Kristi (Jeff) Shaw of Westerville, Vicki (Tom) Hill of Upper Sandusky and 1 son, Tim Rhodes of Columbus. He also has 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-granddaughter.
He lived a life of faith, and left a Christian legacy for his precious family to follow.

Herschel attended Painesville Elementary and graduated from Madison High School. He also was a veteran of World War II having served in the Army. He was a medic with the 124th Evacuation Hospital, deployed to France & Germany. He went on to do his undergraduate studies from The Ohio State University and continued with Ohio State through medical school.

Dr. Rhodes had a medical practice in Upper Sandusky for 43 years, and will be remembered as "The doctor who prayed for his patients", retiring in 1997. He served as Wyandot County Coroner for over 35 years. He also served as Medical Director for Wyandot County Hospice (which he helped to found), and Fairhaven Community for many years. He volunteered his medical expertise on many international Christian medical missions to Haiti, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras and Brazil.

He was a member of Community Christian Center in Upper Sandusky, where he served as an elder and was instrumental in the start of the church in 1984.

Dr. Rhodes was a member of the Christian Business Men's Committee, Christian Medical and Dental Association, Christian Medical Foundation, Ohio Academy of Family Practice, Ohio State University Alumni, the Ohio Christian Ashram, and served on the Salvation Army Board for 15 years. In 2000, he was awarded Outstanding Citizen of the Year in Upper Sandusky. He and his wife Jeannette were both awarded the Outstanding Senior Citizens of the Year award in 2007.

During his youth, Herschel was active in the Boy Scouts of America, which continued into his adulthood with his involvement with the Boy Scout Troop 777 at Community Christian Center.

For hobbies he enjoyed playing pool, basketball, golf, tennis, and watching OSU & Cleveland sports. He loved traveling & camping with his family on many long trips all over the country. He also took his family on many Christian retreats, including United Christian Ashrams in Indiana, New York and Ohio to hear Rev. E. Stanley Jones and others.

Funeral services for Dr. Herschel Almar Rhodes, will be held at 11:00am Monday, March 23, 2015 at the Community Christian Center in Upper Sandusky, with the Rev. Bill Williamson officiating. Burial will follow at Old Mission Cemetery where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Upper Sandusky Color Guard.

Visitations will be held on Sunday, March 22, from 2:00pm to 6:00pm at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky and 1 hour before service time at the church on Monday.
