Helen Burdena Stalter, age 100, passed away quietly in her sleep on Tuesday, February 2, 2021, at 1:28 AM at UCC Fairhaven Community in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, where she had resided for the past 9 years. She was born on September 11, 1920, in Phillipsburg, Ohio, to Sherman and Burdena (Lynn) Yarger. On June 26, 1966, she married Marion Stalter, who passed away in August, 2012.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, a step son Richard Stalter, a step daughter Rosemary (Stalter) Harmon, three sisters – Esther E. Yarger, Clara S. Cattran, and Catherine M. Messersmith – and two brothers – Frederick L. Yarger and Luther D. Yarger. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews whom she often thought of as her own children as well as several step grandchildren.
Helen graduated from York High School (valedictorian) and went on to graduate from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, with a bachelor of arts degree in education. From there she taught 7th grade mathematics for some years in Clyde, Ohio. She later attended Tiffin Business School and eventually retired as a bookkeeper and secretary for Fred Kuenzli, CPA. She was a lifelong Lutheran and an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church since the early sixties when she moved to Upper Sandusky. She was also involved with church activities at John Stewart United Methodist Church. She was an active auxiliary member of VFW Post 2842 in Upper Sandusky until she moved to Fairhaven Community.
In her younger years she traveled in Europe and around this country to visit relatives. She and Marion had wonderful times traveling by train across the United States when they were both able to do so. Helen will be remembered for her wry sense of humor and her ever-present interest in current events and humanitarian issues. She loved to read and especially liked poetry which she often recited from memory. She participated in art classes at Fairhaven and produced some interesting paintings that were framed and made into coasters. She remained sharp witted throughout her life.
The family wishes to thank Fairhaven for the excellent care Helen received during her time there.
