Gilbert "Gib" Murphy

Gilbert "Gib" Murphy, age 80, of rural Nevada, Ohio passed away on December 25, 2009 at 2:40pm at Wyandot Memorial Hospital in Upper Sandusky, Ohio.

Gib was born on August 31, 1929 in Wyandot County to Asa L. and Hattie A. (Bennett) Murphy, both of whom are deceased. He went on to graduate from Wharton High School in 1947.

Gilbert married Joyce A. Heistand on February 21, 1953 at the home of the bride and she survives.

Also surviving are 4 children: Jerry, and his wife Lou Ann, Murphy of Upper Sandusky; Connie (Dan) Brady of Carey, Ohio; Helen Choice of Tampa, Florida; Bonnie (Mark) Adelsperger of Sycamore, Ohio. 13 Grandchildren and 7 Great Grandchildren also survive along with a sister, Wanda Atkins of Willard, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Cletus, Donald and Asa and 2 sisters, Marjorie Sabo and Vera Park.

Gib retired from a lifetime of farming. He was a member of the Union - Salem United Methodist Church in rural Upper Sandusky, where he was
a former trustee of the church. He also served on the Soil and Water Conservation District for 15 years and 10 years on the board for the State
Soil and Water Conservation District Board.

He also served on the Wyandot County Fair Board for 15 years, having served as the Vice President for 6 years and president for 2 years. Gib also
served as president of the Wyandot County Farm Bureau, where he won the
Outstanding Member Award.

In his younger years Gib was involved with 4H for 10 years and when his own children came along he served as an advisor for 13 years. He also served his country in the U.S. Army.

For hobbies Gib enjoyed going to sporting events, especially basketball and baseball, going to the county and state fairs, playing euchre, collecting John Deere memorabilia and spending time visiting with
family and friends.

Funeral services for Gilbert Murphy will be held at 11:00am Wednesday, December 30, at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky, with the Rev. Matt Garrabrant officiating and being assisted by Bill Clinger. Burial will follow in Nevada Cemetery.

Visitations will be held on Tuesday, December 29, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky.
