Gerald "Salty" Sheaffer

Gerald "Salty" Sheaffer, age 96. of rural Nevada, Ohio passed away on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at 11:15PM at the Fairhaven Community in Upper Sandusky.

Gerald was born on December 16, 1916 in Wyandot County, Ohio to Charles W. and Flossie F. (McBride) Sheaffer, both of whom are deceased. He married Evonda M. Gelbaugh on October 1, 1937 in Morral, Ohio and she died April 15, 2004.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Sharon (Glen) Thiel of Upper Sandusky and Janet Walcutt of Nevada. 2 grandchildren Mike (Tia Rice) Thiel of Upper Sandusky and Melissa (Chad) Cunningham of Upper Sandusky along with 4 great grandchildren Keaton and Kenzie Cunningham and Teahl and Tyler Rice.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and 2 brothers Hubert Sheaffer and his twin Herald Sheaffer.

Gerald was a 2nd. Generation farmer having worked from his childhood with his father, and retiring from farming with his grandson Mike. He liked to reminisce about earlier years, especially his fondness for driving the mules as he worked the ground.


He was a long time member of the Wyandot Baptist Church and the Wyandot County Coon Hunters Association .

For hobbies Gerald was an avid coon and deer hunter, fisherman and also enjoyed hunting for mushrooms. He enjoyed watching sporting events and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Funeral services for Gerald "Salty" Sheaffer will be private family service. There will be no public calling hours observed.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate your prayers, and or contributions to St. Peter's School, Wyandot County Coon Hunters Association, or Wyandot Memorial Hospital and can be sent to Lucas-Batton Funeral Home, 476 S. Sandusky Ave. Upper Sandusky, OH 43351.
