Fred L. Cattran, age 96, of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at 3:28am at his home in Upper Sandusky.
Fred was born on August 1, 1917 in Akron, Ohio to Charles and Lucile (Tschantz) Cattran. His mother passed away when he was not yet 2 years old. He lived much of his next 8 years in Upper Sandusky with his grandparents, Adolph and Rosa Tschantz. His father remarried Eva Klay when he was 10 years old after which he lived in Clevaland, Ohio. He married Clara Sophia Yarger on August 31, 1940 at Hope Lutheran Church in Cleveland, and she passed away on June 9, 2004.
He is survived by 4 children; Roberta (Delmas) Luedke of Kent, Washington, Lawrence (Adele) Cattran of Kerrville, Texas, Diane (Thomas) Cattran Fletcher of Columbus Ohio, Doris (Lee Hamblen) Hossalla of Georgetown, Texas. Along with 8 grandchildren, Jennifer (Luedke) Spotted Horse, Christopher Luedke, Lori Landry, Lesa (Landry) Boeck, Kirstin Hossalla, Lara Hossalla, David Fletcher and Charles Fletcher. There are also 8 great grandchildren and a great great granddaughter.
Fred is also survived by a sister Lois Haselow of Orange Village, Ohio and a daughter in law, Roleen (Raymond) Cattran of North Port, Florida, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and a son Raymond L. Cattran.
Fred worked as a machinist for Schmidt Machine in Upper Sandusky for 40 years, starting his employment in 1945. He continued with Schmidt's in a part time capacity for another 20 years retiring officially in 2005, for a total of 60 years.
Fred served his country by enlisting in the US Army in 1940 and served during the European Theater of Operations being honorably discharged in 1945.
He was a long time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Upper Sandusky, where he served at one time as Deacon, Elder and also taught Sunday School for many years.
Fred always kept busy at home. Having a creative mind, he was always thinking of ways to make a part to repair various things. This served him well with his occupation, but also at home where he had a shop in the garage and did many specialty jobs for people in the community.
Fred also loved to travel and visit his children and relatives across the United States.
He had a lifelong love of cars, which he traded often in his later years, and of bicycles, which he rode well into his 90's throughout Upper Sandusky, especially in our local parks, which he enjoyed greatly.
Funeral services for Fred L. Cattran will be held at 11:00am, October 3, 2013 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Upper Sandusky with the Rev. Joe Trester and Rev. Delmas Luedke officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Visitations will be held on Tuesday, October 2, 2013, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky and 1 hour before service time at the church on Thursday.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Upper Sandusky Library or the Upper Sandusky Parks and Recreation Department and can be sent to Lucas-Batton, 476 S. Sandusky Ave., Upper Sandusky, Ohio 43351.
