Earl L. McCombs, age 86, of Galion, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at 7:15pm at his home in Galion, surrounded by his family.
Earl was born on March 30, 1928 in Wyandot County, Ohio, to Edward and Ruth (Hite) McCombs. He married Joy McBride on March 11, 1951 and she survives.
He is survived by four sons; David (Jenny) McCombs of Mt. Gilead, Ohio, Douglas (Rhonda) McCombs of Nevada, Duane(Robin) McCombs of Bucyrus and Dana McCombs of Galion. Along with nine grandchildren; Jared McCombs, Adam(Alisha) McCombs, Zach (Brooke) Daniels, Jessica McCombs, Nathan (Teresa) McCombs, Nick McCombs, Whitney McCombs, Brooke (Clint) Cooper and Madden Rosser, and five great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a grand daughter Elizabeth Grace McCombs and two brothers, Robert and Richard, and a sister Mary.
Earl was retired from the Erie Railroad and as a sales manager for Iberia Fabrication after many years. He also served as a sergeant with the Morrow County Sheriffs Department, and also took part as a member of the Morrow County Mounted Deputies.
He was a member for over 50 years with the Iberia United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher, former lay leader and church board member.
Earl graduated from Harpster High School in 1946, participating in various sports, especially track and field, going to the state in the shotput.
He also served his country in the United States Air Force, and after the service, he served locally in the community, as a trustee for Washington Township, and as a volunteer, along with his wife Joy, with the American Red Cross. Earl was a life member of the NRA and also with the American Legion Post #97 in Cardington.
For hobbies, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, shooting sports, being outside to mow his yard, watching westerns, especially with John Wayne, and watching baseball on TV.
Funeral services for Earl L. McCombs will be held at 11:00am Tuesday, May 27, at the Iberia United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tom Badanjek officiating. Burial will take place at Grand Prairie Cemetery, where military gravesite rites will be conducted.
Visitations will be held on Monday, May 26, 2014, from 1:00pm to 4:00pm at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Nevada, and 1 hour prior to service time at the church on Tuesday.
Memorial contributions may be made to Iberia U.M.C., Homecare Matters-Hospice, Alzheimer's Foundation, Sixteenth U.M.C. or Boys Town, and can be forwarded to Lucas-Batton, 401 S. Main St. Nevada, OH 44849.
