Dorothy O. (Dot) Pfeifer, age 88, of Avon Park, Florida and formerly of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, died at her home in Highland's Ridge, surrounded by her family on October 20, 2009.
Dot was born in Kinniconick, Kentucky on June 13, 1921to John & Martha Oney both of whom are deceased. She married Bill Pfeifer and he passed away in 1993.
As a young girl, Dot was "Rosie the Riverter", During WWII. She worked in a factory welding and operating an over head crane making anchors for the Navy in Pennsylvania.
Dot spent most of her working life in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. She began as a telephone operator fro Ohio Bell Telephone Company. During the snow storm of 1987 in Ohio, Dot and her staff worked continuously for 36 hour shifts to keep the telephone lines open. They were proclaimed local "Heroes". In 1979 she retired as manager of the office of the phone company after having worked there for 37 years. She moved to Cape Coral, Florida with her husband, Bill, until his death in 1993. She then moved to the villages on Highlands Ridge in Avon Park, Florida in 1997 where she enjoyed all of the activities and belonged to the "Nine Holers" golf group. She was also a member of Union Congregational Church in Avon Park, Florida
Dot is survived by a son David Strasser and his wife Jan of Highlands Ridge, Florida, a grandson William, and his wife Mona, Strasser, two great granddaughters, Brandi and Shylee Strasser of N. Ft. Myers, Florida, a granddaughter Heidi, and her husband Rob, Gossett and two great grandsons, Austin and Aaric of Louis Center, Ohio. She is also survived by three sisters, Emma Lumberson of McKinney, Texas, Minnie Allen of Clarksville, Arkansas, and Ruth, and her husband Paul, Thiel of Upper Sandusky, Ohio.
Dot was preceded in death by her mother and father, her beloved husband Bill, a sister, Edith, and two brothers, Dwight and Jack.
A Memorial Service for Dorothy O. Pfeifer will be held at 2:00pm, Thursday, November 5, 2009 at Founder's Hall in Highland Ridge, Florida.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00am, Saturday, November 28, at Old Mission Cemetery in Upper Sandusky with Rev. Michael Oney officiating.
