Doris J. Gatchel, age 83, of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at 4:20am in the Emergency Room of Wyandot Memorial Hospital, Upper Sandusky.
She was born on November 21, 1931 in Elyria, Ohio, to Ralph and Bernice (Baldwin) Vogel, both of whom are deceased. She married Robert E. Gatchel on December 30, 1950 in Carey, Ohio, and he passed on August 14, 2009.
Doris is survived by 4 sons, Dennis (Deb) Gatchel of Upper Sandusky, Robert (Jeanie) Gatchel Jr. of Tiffin, James Gatchel of Nevada and Lyle (Jo Ellen Simonsen) Gatchel of Nevada. Along with 3 daughters, Christine (James) Bricely of Tuscon, Arizona, Nannette (Liz Schlosser) Gatchel of Portland, Oregon and Janice (Jeff) Williams of Naples, Florida.
10 surviving grandchildren, Nicholas Gatchel, Nathan Gatchel, Adrienne Osinski, Jesse Bricely, Erin Bricely, Alexa Gatchel, Ethan Gatchel, Cody Gatchel, James Gatchel and Jack Gatchel. 14 Great Grandchildren, along with a brother, Ralph Vogel of Norwalk.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a grandson; Luke Bricely, and a brother; Lawrence Vogel.
Doris was a homemaker and also had worked for 13 years in the office of the Upper Sandusky Medical Association, and also 10 years as the secretary for the John Stewart United Methodist Church in Upper Sandusky.
She was a 1949 graduate of Carey High School and went on to attend Ohio State University and Bowling Green State University.
Doris was a member of the John Stewart United Methodist Church, and the Myrta Moody Circle - John Stewart United Methodist Women, where she was a past President. She was also a member and past president of the ABC Mothers League, along with the Wyandot Tracers, of the Ohio Genealogical Society.
Doris's hobbies included baking, cooking, painting and reading. She had a lifelong appreciation of nature which she enjoyed through vegetable and flower gardening, birdwatching, walks in Stepping Stones Park and sitting by the Sandusky River. She is also remembered as a volunteer to local organizations including the church and Wyandot County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Funeral services for Doris J. Gatchel will be held at 11:00am Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky, with the Rev. Brian Arnold officiating.
Visitations will be held on Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 at the funeral home.
