Doreen Harriman

December 4, 1931 — January 24, 2014

Nona Doreen Harriman, age 82, of rural Morral, Ohio, passed away on Friday, January 24, 2014 at 2:10 pm at the Primrose Retirement Community of Marion.

Doreen was born on December 4, 1931 in Athens County to Cecil and Hazel Griffin. She married Richard W. Scott, who was killed in 1952 in the Korean War. His parents Wayne and Faye Scott remained an important part of her life until they passed away. On March 20, 1955, she married Dale Laurel Harriman. They were married for 45 years prior to his death on January 11, 2001.

Surviving are four sons: Murray Harriman, Laurel (Becky) Harriman, Dean Harriman and Dana (Kimberly) Harriman, all of Morral; a stepdaughter: Lisa Waterfall of Hartville, Ohio; one sister: Freda Wilson of London, Ohio; eight grandchildren: Shannon Hunsicker Downing, Wendy Harriman, Jenny Dale, Syrena Harriman, Katie Harriman, Paige Harriman, Skylar Harriman and Tesla Smith; and six great grandchildren: Kayla Stevenson, Kie Stevenson, McKenzie "LuLu" Brown, Riley Dale, Kylie Huddle and Kalyn Bullion.

Doreen was preceded in death by sisters June Walton and Phyllis Craycraft, a brother, Ronald Griffin and by three grandchildren Latoya Manning, Christopher Huddle and Jarred Bullion.

As a woman of faith, Doreen lived every day to serve the Lord. She was a lifelong member of the Morral United Methodist Church, a member of the United Methodist Women and served for several years as the president of the Morral United Methodist Women. For many years, she delivered food to shut-ins, led prayer groups, and organized banquets and bake sales for the church. She lived to spread the word of God.

Doreen was passionate about music from an early age. Along with singing in church, she was the singer and harpsichordist in a trio called The Tri-tones with best friend Marilyn Fremont and sister-in-law Carol James. The Tri-tones performed all over Ohio at churches, nursing homes and other events. Doreen loved nature and birdwatching. She took great pride in her gardens and the landscaping of her farm home, including her favorite tree, the dogwood. She loved to crochet, paint, travel, play dominoes and teach her granddaughters how to cook.

As the matriarch of Harriman Brothers Farm, Doreen was the heart of the Harriman family. She enjoyed bringing the family together for large home-cooked meals. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Doreen spent her life taking care of her family and giving back to her community. She will be remembered as a selfless woman who treated everyone with compassion, kindness and warmth.

The family would like to thank the staff at Primrose Retirement Community and Heartland Hospice for their kindness, care and friendship.

Funeral services for Doreen will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, February 1, 2014 at the Morral United Methodist Church with Reverend Ralph Velazco officiating. Burial will follow at Grand Prairie Cemetery.
