Corinne Jane Newell

July 1, 1935 — June 3, 2022

Upper Sandusky

Corinne Jane Newell, a lifelong resident of Upper Sandusky (aka "Upper"), passed away peacefully on Friday, June 3, 2022, a month shy of her 87th birthday.   Born at home in rural Upper on July 1, 1935, she was the youngest daughter of Joseph B. and Eva Luella (Day) Gibson.  She is survived by her husband of nearly 69 years, C. Allen "Al" Newell.  They were married at the Lutheran Church, 216 West Wyandot Avenue in Upper on August 29, 1953.

Mrs. Newell is survived by her children; Cindy (Lee) Constien of Nevada, Keith (Dawn) of Forest, as well as Loretta and Kevin both of Phoenix, AZ.  She is also survived by her older sister Alice Swartz, younger brother F. David "Hoot" Gibson, eight grandchildren, two great grandsons and three great granddaughters as well as many other relatives.

Corinne's journey began working various jobs around Upper to include clerking at Kinley's grocery on South Hazel Street and "egg candling" at the Guthrie's Dairy/Creamery on North 7th Street.  Her primary love was being a full time housewife for many years until the Newell nest was empty.  Corinne's love of music was contagious throughout her life with family and friends as she led the church choir, local musical ensembles, and at one time was the oldest performing trumpet player in the USHS alumni marching band.   She was an accomplished seamstress and sewed many garments over the years for her children, grandchildren, friends, and many residents in and around Upper.  Mrs. Newell proudly served on the Wyandot Memorial Hospital Board of Governors for numerous years and enjoyed being involved with a diverse number of other groups holding elected positions in many throughout the decades.  She worked at Artz Department store, the Wyandot Co. Auditors office for 10 years, the Wyandot Co. Commissioners office for 3 years all while earning an associates degree in business.  After "retiring" and in her later years, she enjoyed writing and she published several books. Other hobbies included being an avid reader, collecting Hallmark ornaments, tins, and teddy bears, and for decades was the "numbers caller" for the annual Newell Christmas bingo games.

Visitation is from 1:00 to 3:00 PM and from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky.  A private family gathering will be held at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery near Sycamore at a later date.
