Carrol Lou Pfeiffer enjoyed visits from her family on Christmas Day, then passed away on December 29, 2022. She was born in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, on "Nine Eleven Thirty-Seven" to Thomas and Ida (Swartz) Vent. She lived in Wyandot County her entire life, first in a brick duplex on SR 67 with her parents, brother Robert, grandparents Walter and Carrie (Clinger) Vent, and teenagers Aunt Josephine and Uncles Dale and Rex. By 1950, Tom, Ida, Carrol, and Robert were sharing the house with Dale and Miriam Vent and their son Michael. Carrol went to Mifflin School, was elected president of the Mifflin Busy Daughters 4-H club in 1952 and graduated from Upper Sandusky High School in 1955 with secretarial skills that landed her a job with a local attorney. With her earnings, she bought a '57 Chevy bel-air, green with shiny chrome and a good radio. The story goes that Bob Pfeiffer left his '55 baby blue Ford in the driveway, preferring to take her car to a movie or the lake.
Carrol married Robert "Bob" Eugene Pfeiffer (1933-79) in 1957, and the two purchased a tiny house in a rural neighborhood on County Road 62. Carrol took up the full-time job of raising four children: Lisa (Dave) Frisch of Findlay, Elaine Pfeiffer and Ann Pfeiffer of Upper Sandusky, and Glen (Denise) Pfeiffer of Carey, Ohio. When her "doll house" began bursting at the seams, she thought up a unique design for a major addition to the home, and Bob with help from friends constructed it. When asked about parenting, she says her kids were raised with "common sense." Carrol took them to Sunday morning services and many youth activities at nearby "Mud Church." Using each summer's vacation time from Whirlpool, Bob drove the family to Twin Lakes campground near Cheboygan, Michigan, a favorite destination of the Vent family and one Carrol's in-laws, Michael and Lenore Pfeiffer, came to love. Carrol baked many dozens of molasses, chocolate chip and butterscotch cookies for the trips, and using a camp stove sent the aroma of frying bacon and eggs or freshly caught fish throughout the primitive campground.
The next stage of her life brought employment in the Wyandot County Court House where she issued marriage licenses to countless couples. She bought a house on N 7th Street in Upper Sandusky, within walking distance of her job and across the street from her Uncle Rex and Aunt Ruthanna Vent.
Other travel included flying to Florida with Ida to visit Josephine (Vent) Holdcraft and driving to Wisconsin to spend time at brother "Bob" and Nancy's lake home and visit nephews Brad (Christine Sveum) Vent and Brian (Liz) Vent as well as their mother, Marie Vent. Minot, North Dakota became a destination when Lisa and Dave moved west with Carrol's first two grandchildren, Eric (Amanda) Frisch of Columbus and Kyle Frisch of Findlay. The little boys loved having "Grandma Pfeiffer" visit and were glad to move back to Ohio where she could babysit and attend their school and church programs. Carrol's younger grandkids, Jarrod Pfeiffer (friend David Conley) of Forrest, Jayson (Abby) Pfeiffer of Mount Blanchard, and Jenna (Kyle) Carr of Sulphur Springs, all children of Glen Pfeiffer and Lisa (Lewis-Pfeiffer) Pfleiderer, spent time reading books, doing crafts, and making Christmas cookies at Grandma Pfeiffer's kitchen table. Each of Carrol's kids and grandkids knew that she loved them for who they are and would do anything she could to support them during times of need. When her widowed mother could no longer live alone, Carrol welcomed Ida into her second home on N 7th Street in Upper Sandusky until a nursing facility became necessary.
While Carrol enjoyed watching her soap opera, a Buckeyes or Steelers football game, or a parade on TV, her favorite entertainment was seeing Jarrod or Jenna march in the Upper Sandusky Ram Band, attending a country music concert with Elaine, listening to Eric play drums or bass with the VAN-DELLS, watching Kyle and his puppets entertain at Vent Cousin reunions, and just listening to her family talk and laugh around the dinner table. Carrol and son Glen prioritized the tradition of her grandparents Walter and Carrie by reinstating the family reunion during sweet corn season. With her daughter Ann's help, Carrol adopted a string of rescued dogs as pets.
The bright spot of 2020 was becoming Great Grandma to Oakley Jo Pfeiffer, daughter of Jayson and Abby. The highlight of 2022 was serving as ringbearer as son Glen took Denise as his wife. Carrol's desire was that every family would get along as well as her own does, forgiving offenses, staying close, and enjoying each other. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister-in-law Nancy Vent, and an infant sister.
It was Carrol's wish that her services will be private.
Carrol made contributions to The Wyandot County Humane Society and to Ronald McDonald House of Central Ohio. Memorial gifts may be made to either of the above or to Hospice of Wyandot Memorial and can be sent to Lucas-Batton Funeral Home, 476 S. Sandusky Ave. Upper Sandusky, Ohio, 43351.
