Betty Thelma Hanke, 92, of Upper Sandusky, passed away, Friday, August 29, 2025, at Vancrest of Upper Sandusky.
She was born on November 17, 1932, at Mouth of Laurel in Kentucky. Her biological father was William Dummit; her adopted father was Norman V. Armstrong and her mother was Mae F.(Highland) Armstrong Kramer. Both preceded her in death as well as her sisters. Pauline and Doris.
Upon graduating from Upper Sandusky High School, she attended Mansfield General Hospital of Nursing where she obtained her RN degree in 1954. Then she began her nursing career at Wyandot Memorial Hospital in the OB unit and retired after 25+ years of service. On June 6, 1954, Betty married Manfred G. Hanke, who died in October of 2019. They shared sixty-five wonderful years together. Their four children are son, Martin (Connie) of Norwalk; daughter, Sue Makosky of Kent; Son, David (Helen) of Wharton, and daughter Sonya (Scott) of Upper Sandusky.
Betty was grandmother to eleven grandchildren: Kim (Mark) Humphrey, Adam (Louise) Hanke, Ryan (Jill) Hanke, Daniel (Liz) Makosky, Justin Makosky, Rachel (Alex) Hale, Sarah (David) Horstman, Matthew Hanke, Andrew (Clara) Hanke, Troy (Dana) Jarrell, and Trisha (Curtis) Morris. Additionally, she enjoyed her 22 great-grandchildren.
Betty and Manfred traveled often to Germany to visit Manfred's family; other adventures included Hawaii and the Senior Citizen bus trips. Betty's hobbies were knitting and crocheting as well as making quilts that she gifted to her family members. Numerous cats, birds, and dogs were lovingly cared for over the years.
Betty was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Upper Sandusky.
Funeral services for Betty Hanke will be held at 11:00am Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at the Lucas Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky, with Rev. Barry Halter officiating. Burial will follow the services at Oak Hill Cemetery, Upper Sandusky.
Visitations will be held from 9:30am to 11:00am on Tuesday at the Lucas Batton Funeral Home. Concluding visitations, memorial service by the Nurses Honor Guard will take place paying tribute to Betty's career in Nursing.
