Berniece E. Bear, age 98, of Upper Sandusky, Ohio and formerly of Marseilles, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 2:10 a.m. at The Inn at Westbrook in Upper Sandusky.
She was born on September 28, 1915 in Hardin County, Goshen Township, Ohio, to Frederick W. and Louisa (Seiler) Casper. She attended McGuiggin, the one - room school and later graduated from Kenton High School.
She married Lester J. "Ted" Bear on March 29, 1934 in the Kenton Reformed Church Parsonage, and he died on October 24, 1980.
Berniece is survived by two sons Robert F. (Rosella Walton) Bear of Marseilles and Lowell L. (Shirley Beamer) Bear of West Chester, Ohio. Also surviving are grandchildren Craig A. and Duane E. Bear, both of Columbus; Sharon E. (Grant) Sattler, Toledo; Stephanie S. Bear, Hamilton and Brian W. (Caroline) Bear, Cincinnati; two great grandsons Jacob G. and Nathaniel L. Sattler, Toledo; a niece Marjorie Cave (Robert) Dunnington, Hebron; three great nephews Jeffrey (June) Dunnington, Sugar Land, TX; Bradley (Renee) Dunnington, Blacklick; Steven (Beth)Dunnington, Kamuela, Hawaii; two great nieces Amy Watkins (Mitch)Carley, Westerville and Paula Watkins (Ron) Foth, Powell.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, three half-sisters Allie (Charles) Born, Tillie (Harold) Cave and infant Anna Casper; a niece Shirley Cave (Paul) Watkins.
After marriage she and Lester lived and worked on their farm in Marseilles Township, Wyandot County. For over 28 years she was dedicated to J.C. Penney in Marion where she worked in the dress department.
Berniece was an active member of the Marseilles United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Marseilles School Boosters Club.
Berniece and Lester enjoyed taking their five grandchildren on day trips in their station wagon every summer. She and Lester also enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and Canada with family and friends, Lewis and Mary Bell. After Lester's passing, she traveled to Norway, Sweden, New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii and
Europe. For 10 years she enjoyed attending UN seminars in New York City.
Having a fun-loving and mischievous personality, Berniece truly had a great sense of humor, always keeping you on your toes with her quick wit.
She was known as the "Butterscotch Pie Lady". She enjoyed quilting, playing the piano, mowing the lawn and feeding and watching the birds.
Having lived for 98 years, she saw a lot of changes, going from the horse-drawn wagons to supersonic planes and the moon landing, and from horse drawn-plows to huge tractors with computers. She liked to keep
abreast of the new technology by taking a computer class. She kept in touch with relatives by e-mail.
Funeral services for Berniece E. Bear will be held at 11:00am Friday, March 28, 2014 at the Marseilles United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ray Daniel officiating. Burial will follow at Chandler Cemetery.
Visitations with be on Thursday, March 27, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky, and an hour before the service at the church on Friday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Marseilles United Methodist Church, Hospice of Wyandot County, or a charity of the donor's choice and can be sent to Lucas-Batton, 476 S. Sandusky Ave. Upper Sandusky, Ohio 43351.
