Art Monroe

June 20, 1909 — February 16, 2008

Art Monroe, age 98, a long time Nevada resident, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 2:50p.m.

Art was born on June 20, 1909 in Vernon Township, Scioto County to Joseph and Hannah Katharine (Patten) Monroe, both of whom are deceased. He graduated from Wheelersburg high school in 1927. He then married Mae Allen on October 15, 1932 in New Boston, Ohio and she died on June 20, 1994.

Surviving are three sons: Roger and his wife Susan, Monroe of Bucyrus, Ohio, Marvin and his wife Pat, Monroe of Sunbury, Ohio, and David and his wife Becky, Monroe of Martel, Ohio. Four daughters: Norma and her husband Charles, Bowers of Bucyrus, Ohio, Jane and her husband Harry, Vorrath of El Cajon, California, Bonnie and her husband Jim, Burch of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, and Cathy and her husband Tadd, Cook of Bucyrus, Ohio. Nineteen Grandchildren and thirty two great grandchildren.
Art was preceded in death by his wife Mae, his daughter Wildeth Joy Monroe, a grandchild, and one great grandchild, three brothers, Raymond Monroe, Joseph Monroe, and Waldo Monroe, and four sisters, Mary A. Hurst, Louella K. Monroe, Irma R. Piskorowski, and Irene Newman.

Art came to Nevada after high school to raise ducks and also became engaged into farming. He then became a self employed electrian from 1940 until his retirement. He was a 50 year member of the K of P Lodge # 234, where he was past Chancellor Commander in 1964. He was a former member of the Nevada Lions Club and the Nevada Volunteer Fire Department. Art was very community minded and was involved in many civic projects through the years. Art's hobbies included fishing, gardening, making apple butter and playing the harmonica. Art was a class A trouble shooter who was always up to the challenge of fixing things or even inventing things of practical use.

A Memorial Service will be held 3:00pm Saturday, March 8, 2008 at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Nevada. The Rev. Robert Hamilton will be officiating with burial in Nevada Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Nevada Lutheran Church or K of P Lodge #234 or the donors choice and can be sent to Lucas-Batton Funeral Home, 401 S. Main St. Nevada, Ohio 44849.
