Gilbert Bucher Sr.

Gilbert Bucher Sr., age 98, Nevada, Ohio, passed away on Monday, December 31, 2018 at 11:18pm at the Bucyrus Community Hospital.

He was born on July 14, 1920 to parents Pauline (Lukert) and Paul Bucher in Bucyrus, OH.  He lived most of his childhood on a farm just outside of Oceola, OH, and most of his adult life in or near Nevada, OH.    For the past two years he was a resident of Maplecrest Assisted living in Bucyrus.

He married his wife, Shirley F (Reece) Bucher in 1956.  Together they enjoyed traveling, camping, and spending time with their family.  They were married for 57 years and she passed away on January 25, 2013.

He is survived by three sons and two daughters;  Dave Bucher, Sr. (Bunny) of Upper Sandusky, Ron Bucher (Pat) of Upper Sandusky, Gilbert Bucher, Jr (Laura) of Nevada, Kim Bucher-Tyo (Gary) of Mt. Gilead, and Sharon Gunder (Rick) of Mansfield, OH.  He has nine surviving grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents Pauline (Lukert) and Paul Bucher, his wife, Shirley F. (Reece) Bucher, his daughter Sharon Leathem, and seven brothers: Homer, Richard, Carl, John, Fred, Robert, and Milton; and two sisters:  Theresa Dobkins and Persis Beard.

Gilbert graduated from Nevada High School in 1938.  He worked at the Oceola Quarry right out of High School.  At age 19 he started working for National Lime & Stone Co (Spore plant), Bucyrus, where he continued his career as a Maintenance Supervisor for approximately 50 years.  He retired at age 69.  He was a dedicated employee and took great pride in his work.

He was a veteran and was drafted while he worked at the former Oceola Quarry into the Army during World War II.

He always had a huge garden and, lots of flowers and fruit trees, and for many years enjoyed fishing and camping at Lake Erie.  He always liked playing Euchre when the family would get together, but in his latter years he spent more time playing and winning at 500 Rummy.

He was a loving father and grandfather and a great provider.   We have been blessed to have him in our lives and will miss him dearly.

Funeral services for Gilbert Bucher Sr., will be held at 1:00pm Tuesday 8, 2018 at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky with Rev. Jim Stauffer officiating.  Burial will be at Oceola Cemetery.

Visitations will be held on Tuesday from 11:00am to 1:00pm at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky.
