Erma Jean Sturgeon of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, died surrounded by family at 1:15 am, Sunday, February 18, 2018, at Wyandot Memorial Hospital. She was 92 years old.
Born November 16, 1925, in Charleston, IL, Erma Jean was the daughter of Sidney and Ruth Ellen (Askew) Closson. On January 10, 1946, she married Robert E. Sturgeon in the parsonage of the First Christian Church in Charleston. He died October 2014.
Erma Jean is survived by six children, Kathy (Tom) Creger, Bill (Deb) Sturgeon, and Steve Sturgeon of Upper Sandusky; Ruth (Michael) Mistic, Medina; Bob Jr. (Rosanne) Sturgeon, Divide, CO; and Mike (Karla) Sturgeon, Sunbury, and 14 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, brother – Ralph Closson, and daughter-in-law, Katie.
Erma Jean graduated high school and attended Eastern Illinois State Teachers College, both in Charleston, IL.
Erma Jean was employed by Wyandot Memorial Hospital, retired as secretary to the treasurer of the Upper Sandusky Schools and was an EMT for the Wyandot County EMS. She played an active role in the growth of Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area helping her husband in many various ways.
She was past Worthy Matron of the Marseilles Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. For many years, she was a member of the Marseilles United Methodist Church and its Mary Circle. She served with the ladies of the Pitt Twp. Fire Department Auxiliary and volunteered with several community organizations.
For hobbies, Erma Jean enjoyed square dancing, traveling and visiting family, enjoyed all nature especially deer and eagle spotting, working jigsaw puzzles, and was the matriarch of the weekly Tuesday evening family domino group.
Service will be Wednesday, February 21 at 11:00 am at the Marseilles United Methodist Church and officiated by her children. Burial at will follow at Chandler Cemetery, Marseilles. Visitation will be 5-8 pm at Lucas Batton Funeral Home Tuesday, February 20, and prior to the service at the church.
